November 29 to December 20

The Milford Historical Society’s Country Store will open for Christmas shopping on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. on Nov. 29, Dec. 6, Dec. 13 and Dec. 20 at the Bryan-Downs House, 34 High Street.
If you are new in town or know someone who is, we have a number of Milford history books and reproduction maps of the early settlement that make great Christmas gifts. There’s also a children’s coloring book about local history.

There are dozens of old-fashioned toys (no batteries needed!) that will fascinate children.  The small toys make great stocking stuffers. The store also offers candles, Christmas ornaments with the Society logo, two kinds of soap, sachets with lavender from this summer’s MHS herb garden, mineral samples, prisms and more.

For your safety, customers’ temperatures will be taken by a non-contact forehead thermometer. Please wear masks. Social distancing will be expected, and a hand-sanitizing station will be available for use before and after you shop. There is a Plexiglas shield at the sales counter.

The best part is that you can shop at your leisure and avoid crowds at malls and big stores. The building and restroom are fully accessible.
Maximum 5 people

The Country Store is open during regular visiting hours of The Milford Historical Society and special events. We carry children's toys, books on Milford's history, maps of old Milford, crafts and gifts. The Country Store  also has an exhibit of many old grocery containers and store-related items.

  • The toys in the store don't need batteries.
  • All ages enjoy watching the blocks flip over each other on a jacob's ladder from the store.
  • Try reliving what a colonial school was like with a quill pen & ink from our Country Store. Only 6 feathers on a goose are suitable for use as pens. You have to be careful how hard you press while writing. Children as young as 12 learned to cut and trim their quill pens with a penknife.
  • Other historical gifts include Indian points (arrow heads), prisms to hang in the window panes, colonial hats, dominoes and pick up sticks.
